I love expressing ideas linked to language and narrative and taking full advantage of the freedom in illustration to employ a wide variety of media. I’ve very much enjoyed life-drawing classes, which are about pure expression of the subject in front of me, and they have increased my confidence in observational drawing.

Commenting on a few of the images shown here:

“robin hoods bay” is a personal piece; it was inspired by family history and records a reunion that took place to celebrate the 80th birthday of two twin brothers. The images are a mixture of past and present, I was particularly working to capture my younger cousins sense of fun.

“moths” started from Matthew 6:19 “where moth and rust doth corrupt” I explored themes connected with moth collecting, I was fascinated by the idea of killing, mounting and displaying multiple specimens of these fragile creatures. I represented the element of repetition by creating templates using wire.

“ships” emerged from researching voyages of discovery, when I found myself focusing more on images of ships. I was working to produce an artist’s book and the language element suggested itself from the common use of ‘-ship’ as a suffix.

“sketchbook” shows the development of work towards my final project on art foundation, which was inspired by the notion of halls of memory and there are both literal and metaphorical interpretations of this theme.

“span that world” was a commission piece that shows my development work and final images for which the starting point was an existing logo and motto. I wanted to develop a design that reflected the ideals and outlook of the 16–20 year-old client organisation.

Having discovered my interest in illustration, I am really looking forward to developing my personal style, but also exploring and engaging with the opportunities that a degree course will offer.
